Warmth: 20" x 16" oil painting on wrapped canvas $500

It's cold here in my part of the world so I needed to inject a bit of warmth this holiday season, I haven't had much time to paint until the last few days, nice to get back to the easel, I hadn't painted in about 2 weeks and I was surprised how rusty I had had gotten, found it really had to focus for a while, but I slowly kept at it.

Blue glass

Blue glass: original still life painting oil on 20" x 16" canvas $500

For most of my work I tend to stick with more earth tones but there is something about dark coloured glass I love to paint. I decided to use a lot of transparency in the background to allow my initial drawing to show through, which is something I am doing more and more, just love the look.

Available at my etsy shop here please visit for more details.

Blue glass wip

Here is what is on my easel today, started this yesterday afternoon,  and it's coming along nicely, I decided to allow a lot of the under painting to show through, I didn't post the latest version but my block in is finished, which is a good thing as I won't be able to get back to this until tomorrow evening, I have a few issues with my drawing but should be an easy fix later on.

Orange and decanter

Orange and decanter: Oil on wrapped canvas 18" x 24"

This painting started out a little different, my main focus was actually going to be something else but mid way through I realized it wasn't going to work out so I had to change my plan. That's the way it goes sometimes, Normally I would consider moving on but glad I stuck with it. This painting turned out OK and was a great learning experience.

Painting comes unframed, varnished and with hanging hardware attached, please allow 2 to 3 weeks from date of posting for painting to dry to the touch and have varnished applied. Visit my Etsy shop for more details

Orange on Black

Orange on Black: Oil on 11" x14" wrapped linen. $350

I love painting on linen, this painting of course is all about the orange, saw it in the fridge, caught my eye as it seemed to glow, of all the time I have spent in front of the easel, oranges haven't been a subject I like to paint but being fall, I guess I just needed some warm colours to warm me up a bit and of course this time of year the sun starts to go down by mid-afternoon, so I really need it.

Had a great day in front of my easel yesterday. Started this painting in the morning, painting went according to plan for a change, I had a few little tweaks to do today, Just minor stuff. I stopped by the local thrift store yesterday and picked up some great props, the Urn was one of them. People donate some great stuff here in town.

Green vase and plums

Green vase and plums: Oil on 11" x 14" wrapped canvas $350

I bought these plums more then 4 weeks ago and totally forgot about them, came across them while looking for something to munch on, a bit past their ripeness but still good enough to paint. I have been really happy with my progress of late, rediscovering some of my secondary oil colours, been experimenting with Phthalo blue and transparent oxide yellow from Cobra,  like it's name it's so transparent and Phthalo blue is so strong so much fun to play around with.

Sunday, October 27, 2013

For the last little while I have been itching to go attend an open life drawing session here in town, so Thursday I woke up and decided that this was the day, I searched my house for all my drawing equipment, after an hour I discovered  everything tucked away in the basement, I used to do a lot of life drawing but finding a venue can be difficult that is close by and during times I have a available. I was really curious how I would make out as it's been years since I have drawn from a life model, The model was very animated and had some great poses, as suspected I was pretty rusty but I managed to get into it and had a pretty good night.

The placement wasn't very well thought out as you can tell but not drawing the face allowed me to focus on some shading, form and edges that I might not of worked on if I had included the head so all is good. I was pretty wore out after this one so the next drawing didn't turn out at all I was a little heavy handed from the start and spent most of my time adjusting to that and in the end wasn't very good.

Anyway I am looking forward to going again this Thursday, perhaps once I get comfortable I will bring my paints along.

Until next time

Mini Gourd

Mini gourd and water pitcher  oil painting on 9" x 12" artist panel $250

I love this time of year, these little gourds are in season, so awesome to paint.

Using a limited range of colours for most of the painting I used 4 colours for almost all of it, to help with temperature changes I used a few more but very much , I tried to convey a sense of strong light coming from above. The under painting is a strong lime green and the panel was left really slick so a lot of the under painting shows through which gives this painting a fresh look.

For more information please visit my Etsy shop

Hope you enjoy it.

Falling Leaves

Falling leaves 9" x 12" wrapped linen $250

I know this was a long time in coming, had a busy few weeks so I hadn't much time to paint in my studio.

I was shopping at the local art store and noticed they were selling wrapped linen supports, always wanted to try linen so I picked 1 up, really love the texture and the way the paint reacts with linen. Cost wise they are about twice the cost of canvas but worth it.

I went for a warm softer look with this painting, stayed mostly in the mid tone and kept the drawing sketchy and for the focus I put complimentary colours red and green next to each other to create a nice vibration between them.

Painting comes unframed and will ship in 1 to 2 weeks once dry to touch. visit my Etsy shop for details

How is your week going?

So Art in the Park for me was quite good, although sales were not that great I did make a few new connections and who doesn't love it when someone compliments you on your work, I must have had hundreds of people stop by and chat to say how much they loved my paintings. One person in particular, this grey haired elderly woman stopped, smiled and walked around my booth, and turned to me and said, you know Dave, I am 90 years old, I am a classically trained artist from Europe, and have painted all my life and I must say your work is truly beautiful, much like the old dutch masters, she thanked me for reminding her of the earlier time in her life when she would visit Art galleries throughout Europe and said I had to visit the Museum in St. Petersburg. We chatted for a good 1/2 hour about art and life in general, then she slowly turned and walked away. Really made my day.

So to change the topic, last week I stopped at my favorite art store and they had lined wrapped supports for sale, 9 x 12, nice size and fairly reasonable, as a treat for myself I bought 1 to give it a try. Since I was busy I didn't get a chance to try it til yesterday. I really love the texture, small bumps and smooth, paint really lays down well, I was afraid of that, Linen isn't cheap but I think I found a new favorite. Here is my work in progress, just early stage of course.

Upcoming events for me include the Mississauga Art Society Fall show at Visual Arts Mississauga From October 4th to the 6th.

On October 9th I have 2 paintings in a group show called Late Fall 13 at the Tag Gallery in St. Catharines,
so excited about this one it runs from Oct. 9 to Dec 24, if you live close by, I would love to see you. This also means I am listed on their website, Sweet.

The address is:

St. Catharines

I will keep you updated.

B-Roll: Oil on 11" x14" wrapped canvas $350

Here is a little painting I did the other day, was a bit busy preparing for 2 upcoming shows so I hadn't had much time to post.

I called this one B-roll as I used artist colours I don't normally use, like Phthalo Blue (btw what kind of word is Phthalo), Transparent yellow oxide, sap green and Dioxazine purple made for some interesting colour combinations, I did use a few of my standard colours for colour shifts and tinting like cad red and lemon yellow but mostly those 3.

Available at my Etsy shop here

Intervene: Still life oil painting on 24" x 20 wrapped canvas

So I was struggling with a painting for about a week and it was going nowhere but I kept at it, well I guess my wife got frustrated with me complaining about it and rush in and said "It's over let it go!" and she took down the setup I had set this one up in it's place, she then said"Ok get to work". I love her.

I had so many things planned, but before I knew it I was in front of my easel, just making a little change to this painting I had been working on, it was about 1/3 done this morning. Well, guess I underestimated the time to make this small change, 8 hours later. Life is good.

So just a little update on this painting, My lovely wife has decided she would like to keep this one, sorry folks!

Waterfall: Oil on 9" x 12" Artist panel $250
So my art friend and I decided to head out to paint today, at first I tried to paint a wonderful pond with waterlilies all over the place but just turned into a huge mess, so I wiped it clean, next I tried another scene but again, same thing, a little rusty I suppose, it was starting to warm up,  we were talking about heading home in a bit so I thought I better get something done, so this is just a quick sketch of a small waterfall, I didn't even worry about filling the whole canvas, after all I just wanted to capture the falls. So this day wasn't a total loss I also sketched out my next studio painting, good times.

Painting is easy, Not!

So I read this quote today, it goes

Painting is easy when you don't know how,
but very difficult when you do.

Edgar Degas

Courtesy of Kim Rempel

Case in point, for the last 4 days I have been working on a painting, and it started ok although I had to sketch out my idea 3 times before I got something I could work with.

Started working away  and things were going fine, and then for some reason, I started to labour over some elements and painted and repainted, so much so I didn't even get to finish the rest of my block in, some elements turned out really nice but i was agonizing over it so much, my wife came in today and said let it go and dismentled my still life setup. Guess she heard enough of me complaining and took matters into her own hands, then she proceeded to set something else up for me. I love her. So not exactly a wipe or scrape  but it's over.

On another more pleasant note I will be participating in the Visual arts mississauga "Art in the Park" on September 22nd this year, received confirmation the other day, should be a great event, made some great connections last year so I looking forward to the event again, drop by and say hi if you live in the area. I will post when I have all the details.

Anyway here is my painting for all it's worth.

Willow: Oil on 9" x 12" artist panel $250

Today I went out with some friends to paint near the lake, one of our favorite places to go, not only does it have great views, just down the street a cafe opened up that serves hot Hungarian lunches, yum and double yum.

When I go out to paint I am not so much focused on structure, unlike when I paint still life, it's fun to let loose and let the paint fall where it may.

Painting comes unframed Please allow at least 2 weeks for delivery to fully dry, to purchase visit my Etsy shop

Haze: Oil painting on 20" x 24" wrapped canvas $600

A while back I was playing around with something and meant to explore it a little further but never did get back to the idea until now. Wanted to try something a little out of the ordinary for me. I like the idea of really of creating such an obvious focal point. I also have developed a need to use some strong red pigments lately.

If you have any question please let me know, painting comes unframed to keep shipping cost down. Available at my Etsy Shop

Polished: Oil on 8" x 10" artist panel $200

This is the second painting of 2 the first I posted last week, I left the red cloth and just changed some objects, this was a study of reflections and how much is too much or too little, I love painting red, but try not to very often. The iridescent vase in the background was quite a challenge again, someday I might get it but not bad I suppose.

On another note, I have been asked if I would be interested in teaching an intro to oil painting class in the fall, so exciting. Everything is set so if you have never painted with Oils and always wanted to here is your chance, my goal for this is to not only teach the medium but explain the reasoning behind what makes a successful painting, like value, brushwork, design and colour relationships.  Course description can be found here

Chained: Oil  painting on 8" x 10" artist panel  - Sold

I know most people make plans to go out on Saturday's but it the only time I can actually spend a lot of quality time in front of my easel, welcome to an artists life.

Every so often I like to try my hand at a classic still life setup and subject matter. Pretty happy with this one, even though it's a small painting really draws the eye to it.

Iridescent: Oil on 18" x 24" wrapped canvas $550.00

This painting started when I spotted this iridescent glass vase at a local thrift shop, once I brought it home and started setting up my scene I realized this painting was going to be a study of colour and relationships, so I decided to work in a higher light key then normal.

I also wanted to keep the painting fairly loose so most of this painting was created using a small soft synthetic sable brush with a fine point.

Painting comes unframed to keep the cost down but edges are painted black and includes wire to hang If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at anytime.

So hot!

How is everyone on this fine day, My studio has been so hot I haven't been able to spend much time in front of my easel, so instead of painting I have been working on some other things this week, 1 thing I am really excited about but I can't say anything yet as I don't want to jinx it and I have to wait for the until everything is set, but it is a major step towards one of my long term goals.

I have also been preparing for a couple of shows that are right around the corner and 2 other in a month of 2 so I have lots of things on the go.

My outlook has improved I went through quite a low point where most of what I painted I ended up scraping off the canvas or just tossing to the side, I was stuck or had plateaued but forged on and looks like I finally got over it and climbed a level, yeah me.

I hope I can get into the studio tomorrow as I am excited to start my still life I set up today.

Here an old painting from a couple of years ago : Peaches oil on 9 x 12 wood panel

Stay cool

Beacon: Oil on 16" x 20 Wrapped canvas $500.00

Painting looking for it's forever home.

I am happy with the way this turned out, although not quite what I pictured when I started to paint. I was on a roll and started with a #10 round brush, not something I would use very much if at all but just started painting with it and I about I didn't pick up another brush until I signed my name and added a few details right at the end. I have always heard if you are in a rut try something different for a spell. I was suppose to go out painting plein-air today but thought it best to stick with this.

Painting comes unframed to keep the cost down but edges are painted black and includes wire to hang If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at anytime. To purchase this painting visit my Etsy shop

Summer's Muse

Summer's Muse: Oil on wrapped canvas 11" x 14" (sold)

The idea behind this vivid still life painting of a peach with glass objects was to show the contrast of the smooth reflective quality of the glass against the soft fuzzy texture of the peach, although the peach is the main focus what caught my eye was the transparency of the bottle and cup and how the light traveled through the red cup and added a red highlight on the blue bottle.

Friday paint out

Friday morning I meet a few friends near the lake here in Mississauga, at Adamson estate, and although the grounds are not very large  it offers many great views with buildings, gardens and a great view of lake Ontario. each time we go I am tempted to paint the peninsula just to the left of the estate, but just seem to capture it but I think I did a pretty good job this time. This time I took along a bunch of small supports to paint on, the atmosphere was pretty complex, the sky was hazy and there was fog coming of the lake, with sun shining through, the first painting, the key colour was more of a warm tone and I spotted this sailboat way off in the distance, the horizon and the sky blended together which made for a great setting for this one, lots of colour to see.

Sailboat 5" x 7" Oil on Artist hardboard Panel

The second painting, I managed to paint the peninsula, fairly well I think, the atmospheric colour changed quite a lot with this one, I had turned my easel around and the sky became alot cooler in temperature, but the sun had come out as was washing everything in a warm glow.

Peninsula 5" x 7" Oil on Artist hardboard Panel

I was also involved in a paint demo over the weekend for Visual Arts Mississauga, was a fun event and met some great artist, I will post my demo painting, once I get a good shot of it.

Enjoy and if you would like to purchase any of these paintings let me know, I still deciding what to do with all my small paintings, as far as framing or display but then happy to let someone else enjoy them.

Overflow: Oil on 30" x 24" wrapped canvas(sold)
Hey, how is everyone on this fine day, I can finally release this one, I painted this about a month ago, this is my largest painting to date and was produce for a national painting competition but didn't make the cut, no worries though, I like it so that's all the really matters.

I like the direction I was heading with this so hopefully once I get my current struggles subside I can get back to here.

Anyway enough of that enjoy, and comments welcome

Title: Nestled, Oil on 5" x 7" gessoboard.
Thanks everyone for your feedback yesterday, I am starting to make some progress although not as quickly as I would like, I have noticed that I find my focus for colour fades in and out, this happen yesterday, I was rocking along and then for whatever reason I wasn't able to see the colour information anymore or not as well. So When this happens again, Hmmm, I guess I will have to concentrate that much more when it happens again and just work through it.

Comments welcome,

Tipped egg cup

Title: Tipped egg cup. Oil on 5" a 7" hardboard

So as promised here is my finished painting a simple still life, trying to get back on track, some things I like some I don't but hey I am not going to beat myself up over it, overall it turned out and better then most of my latest paintings so for that I am grateful.

Thanks for your patience.

Sunny Wednesday

Hey, How is everyone's week going so far, we have had about a week of cold wet rainy days and the sun has finally come out today, should get out to paint me thinks.

So I am currently in a major slump right now, the past 4 weeks I think I have produced 2 small paintings, or I should say I finished 2 small paintings, I have been painting mostly everyday , I have started many but get stuck part way through and end up struggling through them and eventually just scraping them. I was on quite a roll for a 6 months or so, so I just suppose this is the process for an artist but it's hard not to take it to heart, anyway I continue and perhaps this will work it's self out and I will get back on track but for now it's quite a struggle to even get a simple cup or apple painted, almost like I forgot everything I learned to this point.

Yesterday I took a step back and decided to work on a setup a simple still life and keep it small so I am doing a 5" x 7" painting, it's coming along. I am trying to just go with it and if it doesn't turn out well that's life.

Anyway have a great day and I hope to post something later tonight.

Cheers and thanks for your patience.

Whoa is me

So imagine my disappointment, I have been working at my part-time job a fair amount over the last week, I set up a still life with some rose stem clippings and before I could sit down to paint it, the rose leaves wilted, turned out the little vase I was using had a small crack in it and all the water slowly leaked out, so I got another clipping and set it up again, this time using a different vase, and this time I quickly roughed in the leaves, did I mention it did it roughly and did a bit of work on the background but failed to work in some of the shadows as I planned to get back to it the next day, well that didn't happen so it happen again. So I thought I would pull up the photo to have a look and wouldn't you know it, I hadn't updated the photos. So any way here's is where I am today, Include is the setup with wilted leaves,

I have a new plan, paint everything else and then when ready add a new rose clipping, the poor plant at the side of the house there isn't going to be anything left of it. Hope it goes better, or I may have to scrap the whole thing.

MAS spring show

Hi everybody, sorry no paintings to show at the moment but thought I would at least update you on what's happening, so my group show is almost at an end, last weekend was the opening reception, quite a few people came out to see it so that was great, One of my paintings sold that day, one of my favorites so that was great to see. My painting the Rule of three, I met and chatted a bit with the buyer, so happy for her, I sure she will enjoy it for many years to come.

I haven't been able to paint very much in the last couple of weeks, as I have been filling in at work for people who of off for various reasons, may have a chance to get out to paint tomorrow, weather permitting of course, if not I have a still life set up and ready to go, so I will have something to post soon. The other day I was looking at my paintings on my shelves and then comparing them to the events I want to enter and realized I have a lot of work to produce in the next month or two so I better get at it. In my last few events I have been in I have been chatting with my artist and art lovers and 1 common theme I get is I need to paint larger. Hmmm, thinking I may have to add a large painting a little more often.

Anyway that's it for now

Vase with grass

Vase with grass: Oil on 11" x 14" wrapped canvas.

So here is my latest painting spent about 2 weeks on this one, on and off, due to scheduling, so portions would dry before I could I could properly work in my edges so I must have repainted areas over and over but I am at a point where I am just fiddling with it so it's time to let it go for a spell.  Does it work, I am not sure so what do you think?

Don't get me wrong there are things I like about this, colour variation for one and the colour temperature throughout the painting, I also love painting on a toned pink canvas, strange I know but there I said it.

This currently isn't for sale as I may put a little more work into later on, but I can easily be persuaded.

Red Tulips

Red tulips Oil on 9" x 12" hardboard $250

Spring is in full bloom here finally, seemed to take forever this year, I like winter but it showed up early and didn't want to let go. Anyway I went out yesterday with my friend for a little plein-air time and here is the result. Painting outside is still a little of a mystery but I am getting a handle on it. I plan to go out at least once a week but my main love is still life painting but it's great to get out and try something different. I would love to be on the same level in the studio and outside, guess it's going to just take time. Still I am pleased with my progress.

Painting will take 2 weeks to fully dry before shipping. Painting comes unframed but includes a small wood easel to display.

Docked at the harbour

Docked at the harbour: Oil on hardboard 9" x 12" $250
After submitting a painting to a juried show, my painting friends and I went out to a local harbour to paint while waiting for the results, the weather wasn't the greatest out, cool breeze of the lake, the sun did come out every so often to warm us up a bit, because of the cool weather my painting has a bit of abstract brush work as I needed to work fast to stay warm. Just as I started working on the boat the crew hoped in and started it up but I did manage to capture it before it sailed off.

Painting will take 2 weeks to fully dry before shipping. Painting comes unframed but includes a small wood easel to display. To buy this painting visit my Etsy shop

Artworks Juried show

Hey what do you know, my painting "Empire" was accepted into the ArtWorks Oakville 14th Annual Juried Show, May 11-June 6, Queen Elizabeth Park Community & Cultural Centre, 2302 Bridge Road. missed out 2 previous years so 3rd times a charm I think the saying is. I was also having a bit of a dry spell with juried events so this makes me happy.

While I waited for the jury process yesterday I met with my west end painters group and we went out to bronte harbour to paint for a couple of hours, we setup near the water and painted boats and things, cloudy day with a cool wind, but the sun would come out every so often to warm us up a bit. I have a few tweaks to the painting I worked on but should post it soon.

Good times.

Friday, May 03, 2013

So my friend and I went out on Wednesday to paint outside along the Credit River, I painted 2 paintings but not a big fan of the 1st one so here is the 2nd one I painted. I managed to capture the light a lot better in this one compared to my paintings from last year so I am making progress, Enjoy and hey if you would like to own this painting to have in your home let me know I would be willing to part with it for someone else to enjoy.

Hi again, it's me

Sorry been really busy with work and my resident kitty hasn't been feeling well for the last week and a half, so busy in fact I hadn't been able to get in front of my easel until this afternoon, I also realized a deadline is approaching for a art competition I want to enter and needs to be submitted by the end of the month. I have a fall back piece but would actually like to submit something new. This doesn't give much time as there is a size limitation which is larger than I usually work so I guess I better get to it.

I am about half way finished my current painting so hopefully I will have a new post for you tomorrow sometime. Thanks for hanging in there

 Emergence: Oil on 11" x 14" wrapped canvas $350

Here is another painting using the theme, fog or mist, having a lot of fun with these, having fun playing around with edges and using as little detail as possible except on one 1 or 2 objects and I am really digging the results.

Painting will ship in 2 weeks, once it has dried sufficiently, Edges of canvas are painted and with hanging hardware, framing is optional.

Title: Candelabra Oil on 11" x 14" wrapped canvas $350.00

So hey, this just fresh off my easel right now, I am torn right now, as a realist painter I see so much to refine, but I really like how this is looking at the moment, I am calling it finished. I liked how my last painting looked when I finished so I thought I would try something similar, and this is what I ended up with.

Any thoughts?

Mist: Oil on 14" x 11" wrapped canvas $350

You ever has one of those days where you feel like doing something completely different, well I guess this was one of those days, I had a few things in mind when creating this, negative space for one and how much detail could I leave out and still be recognizable, for the most part the application of paint is fairly thin except the grass, garlic clove and brown cup. I wanted this to remain sketchy so I didn't spend a lot of time on it, about 5 hours from start to finish, which is fairly quick for me.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Sugar bowl

Sugar Bowl: Oil on Raymar panel 5" x 7" $100

I love painting on Raymar panels, so slick, my thinking with this was to leave out a lot of detail with the objects in the background, but still have them read well, most of the shadows are simple blocks of colour and very transparent so the toned canvas is still visible underneath, My main goal was to focus on the sugar bowl so as you may notice the paint is applied quite a bit thicker in this area.

I am sure you can guess but I stuck to warm side of my palette today, I usually use a warm and cool version of the primaries and a few earth tone colours but not today, winter is sticking around a bit to long and I miss the warmth today.

Brass Bowl update

Brass Bowl - Oil on wrapped canvas 9" x 12" $250

With my last post I said I would put this away for a bit, I revisited this yesterday and decided it need just a few tweaks, The problem with it or at least what I didn't like was the center of the painting, the values and intensity was all the same and all those elements were competing with each other, so I toned down all the elements behind the long grass dropping down from the brass bowl to bring that forward, this seemed to help this painting quite a bit, and I am now pleased with the outcome.
