Red delicious

Red delicious - Oil on wood $150.00

This painting is actually painted on a cabinet door front, the local hardware store got a shipment of these things in and was selling them off for cheap, just my kind of thing, high quality wood and study solid frame. painting is 7.25" x 11.25" kind of weird size but it came already framed, just painted the panel on the inside and put a clear oil stain on the outside and bam! Finished size is 11.75" x 16". This setup was a bit of a challenge, more than I thought it would be but turned out alright.

Silver kettle

 Title: Silver kettle
Medium: Oil on Masonite 12" x 16" - $400.00

Yet another metal object, love painting reflections, so much fun. You may notice that this painting has a different feel from the previous one that's because for something different I used a No. 14 filbert brush for the whole thing, which kept me from getting to involved with details which can really get me bogged down.

Silver Waterjug

Title: Silver water jug
Medium: Oil on Masonite 12" x 16" - $400.00

So my lovely wife finally made it back from here travels, so I was able to upload a photo finally. Oh and it's great to have her back of course, no more cereal or hotdogs for dinner. I know what you thinking but when she is here I do most of the evening meals when she is away I just don't feel like going through all the trouble of preparing a great meal for 1.

I have been working on Masonite for a month of 2 now and really like it the paint sits on the surface and takes so long to dry which of course brings it's own challenges but I love it for now. I do have a huge stockpile of wood panels to go use up first as I have run out of Masonite boards but I will revisit them again soon. Love changing things up now and then really challenges me to move forward. Speaking of which this week I will be getting a easel to paint on location so excited.

When the Cat is away

The mouse will play, isn't that the saying, well my lovely wife is exploring the world, well maybe not the world but she is away on a business trip and behaving herself I'm told, guess I should too. Don't say anything to her but I did have cereal for dinner last night. She left Saturday and I painted all day Sunday, and had a great session and finished the painting the same day, wish I could show you but she took the camera so I have to wait until she gets home to snap a pic and post it. Seem to be on an upswing at the moment so I have to take advantage so just about to start another long session today, put on a pot of coffee and just finished lunch, put on some great music and I am ready to get at it, wish me luck.

Have a great day

Marty Nomination Link

As per my last post Voting has commenced for the People's choice award for the Marty's here in Mississauga, and can be found here, So excited, the winners of each category are chosen by the art council of course but I guess they reward the person with the most friends, anyway you can vote for me if you wish or you can visit the website and check out all the nominees. I thought each person would get their own space for people to check out each visual artists work but doesn't seem to at the moment.

Not much painting going on right at the moment, but I had my eye on a few things, so in the next day or 2. I should have something to post, was busy today getting my entry form ready and selecting work for a few juried shows here in town but did spend some time experimenting mixing colours and painting little squares. Much needed exercise as I sometimes have a bit of trouble making that perfect colour.

Persistence

Title: Persistence - Oil on 16" x 20" Masonite

So far those that have followed a bit of the progress with this one I named this one persistence, as I could have scraped this early on but I kept at it. I decided to keep the left side fairly minimal, I have to admit I really liked it when the left side of this painting was bare but thought it needed a little something, so I added the ceramic ball and used slight warm and cool colour shifts to break up the solid block of colour, which seemed stark. This really turned out a lot different then when I started and I was quite discouraged with it but carried on and I am pleased with the final result.

I have a piece of exciting news, every year the Arts council of Mississauga honors local artists in various areas of culture and the arts called the Marty awards, and I have been nominated for the Emerging Visual Artist category, not sure how significant this is but it is a pretty big event here in Mississauga, and hopefully gives me some much needed exposure. Page can be found here In the coming days each nominee gets there own page  winners of each category are chosen by the council but there is popular vote component for peoples choice award.

Apple - metal bowl update

Thanks Kim and "like a sunflower in a pickle jar" - Interesting name. Here is an updated photo, I tried yet again to paint the 3 other objects on the left side but it is still throwing me for a loop for the forth time. so after wiping it again I decided I was stressing over the black empty space so I decided to add some colour and think about it, I removed the offending objects and I will try something else as the painting as it stands is a little off balance as you can see.

So tonight I will see what I can come up with and hopefully have something to show tomorrow afternoon, we can always hope.

Have a great day

April 2nd update

Maybe not the most inspiring blog post title, sorry for that, So the opening night at the Beaux-Arts Brampton was really nice and made a nice connection with a local artist, we have been juried into the same shows of late and finally met each other, a wonderful artist and really great person and she has persuaded me to go out Plein Air painting with her soon, can't wait, always wanted to try it.

So speaking of juried shows, I have 3 coming up that I want to enter so I am busy working away, and here is my latest painting I am working on,

Now I don't normally work on 1 object at a time, with this 1 it just looks that way, I like to work all around the painting blocking in all my shapes first sorting out values and such, but this one has been problematic from the get go, I have wiped the entire left side 3 times now and don't seem to be getting any closer to a solution, not sure what to do about it, as I am getting pretty discouraged with it. I am actually thinking about grabbing my circular saw and trimming of the left side of this one. I don't think I will actually do it but it's tempting.

Anywho, I will try again tomorrow, but first I will paint something else, something smaller to get warmed up.

Have a good night
Cheers
