Apples with Vases

Hey Folks, here is the latest painting to come off the easel.

Apple with Vases Oil on 16" x 20" Masonite. $500.00

I have been working a little larger of late, mainly for a bunch of juried shows coming up, they tend to do better for me and don't get hung in a corner or over the garbage can once they are in. You may remember my Painting "Stacked Blue cups" from a while ago, it was juried into a show starting this week, at Beaux arts Brampton annual show, opening night is this Friday, so exciting.

Still life painting "Vessels"

Good day folks,

Here is my latest painting, and I used my last piece of Masonite, this one may not be a strong as the last 2 but it does have some strong points, I had plateaued there for a while so with these last 3 paintings looks like I may have turned a corner, I love changing my process or materials every so often as it forces me to really focus.

New edit ---- March 22nd
Title: Vessels

Little Brass Cup

Title: Little Brass cup, Oil on 9" x 12" Masonite.

This is the 2nd painting I have done on Masonite, and I love how fast the surface is, paint just slides around so easily, it forces me to use a fair amount of paint to get good coverage. I chose to keep my setup similar to the last painting, and I have 1 more in mind so expect more of the same.

friend + bear hug = cracked rib

Well title says it all I suppose, My mate I hadn't seen in a  while, was so happy to see me he grabbed me and gave me a big bear hug, but at a odd angle and squeezed until I heard a pop, and now I am nursing a suspected cracked rib or perhaps just popped out of place either way, hurts a bit that's for sure. Luckily it's getting a bit better as time goes on but slowly.

Anyway doesn't keep me from painting so I am just about to tackle my next piece have it all sketched out, and ready to put paint to Masonite once again, liked the slickness of the surface with my last painting so I would try it again. Always good to try something new every once in awhile, helps me move forward in my work. I was reading the other day that to really excel at painting or anything else for that matter you need to spend about 10,000 hours at it, seems like a really long time doesn't it, I think I am about1/10 of the way there if I estimate so I better get cracking.

Talk to you soon

Blue Vase with apples

Title: Blue Vase with apples
Oil on Masonite 9 x12  -  $250.00

Well after much thought and looking, I have decided to that this piece is finished, as I am not sure I can do anything more to it to improve it so it is complete, and should take quite a while to fully dry. This painting has a really nice look to it, great colours, experimented a bit using some different colour combinations.

Blue vase wip

Good evening, I got some time this afternoon to paint, about 4 hours or so, I choose to work a little smaller 9 x 12 for this one, as an experiment I am using Masonite for this one, also I have used a fair amount of paint way more then I would normally use, by the end of my painting session, I was covered from head to toe. I don't know if any of my painting friends here have used Masonite with oils but it's painting on glass, even with a nice coat of gesso on top. As you can imagine working fine details is a bit of a challenge as the paint moves around so easily but so far so good, I think I will stop for the night as I have an early start tomorrow but should be able to finish this up after.

Wee Butterfly

Title: Wee Butterfly
Oil on Wood 16" x 20" $500.00

This painting took a long time to develop many things on the go, I think I spent more time just looking at then painting. I think over the next week I will pick up a bunch of new props. The other day I was in one of those big box hardware stores and they were selling unfinished cabinet doors so I picked up a bunch for cheap, look like framed wood panels, can't wait to use them.

March 2nd update

Happy March everyone, I just realized it's been quite a while since I have made a post and thought all of you may be wondering what I have been doing, well for the last 2 weeks I have had a few things going on, 1 of which is I joined a a group called "Artists looking for empty walls" here in town, it's a small group and have a few shows a year in a historical house in Mississauga called the Grange, the first show I will be a part of is starting this Tuesday so I spent a few days picking a few pieces, it's a Themed show based on Spring, so I choose a few older pieces so it meant putting them in frames, I have no idea what the show will look like but it's a great concept for local artists with no where to hang their art and apparently they do generate a lot of traffic.

We are also having some renovations done in the house, although it has been relatively quite it is happening right beside my studio which does make it difficult to paint at times, anyway there are almost finished and everything looks great so I am not complaining. That aside I did start a new painting, but have been struggling with it from the get go, seems to be the norm, of late, but I continue on.

I have been trying to figure out why I have been struggling with my paintings of late and I think maybe it has to do a little with size this one is 16 x 20, maybe I am out of my comfort zone, not to often I work at this size so perhaps that's it.

I have a question for all the artists that view this post and that is, how often do you give up on a painting and wipe it clean or scrap it and start something else? I think the percentage of finished paintings for me seems to be around 75% make it to completion. Just curious.

Anyway I must be off.
Cheers
