Blue vase with leaves

 Currently this piece is untitled
Oil on 12" x 16" wrapped canvas $400.00

I could use a bit of help naming this one, when setting this one up I first was thinking the glass with red juice in it would be the focus but then realized the focus should be the little decorative blue vase, here is a case where a cool colour trumps a warm colour by virtue of intensity and that is what this painting is about.

Enjoy, and comments are welcome. visit me website to view more of my work.

Tarnished

Title: Tarnished
Oil on 8" x 10" wrapped canvas $200.00

I picked this old metal vase up at the local goodwill a few weeks ago, it's a combination of silver and brass and it has tarnished quite a bit, I like the painterly feel this one has along with the rich warm tones, I also have been collecting leaves from around the house, winter is coming so I think I better grab a bunch more before the snow buries them all.

Rose leaves

Title: Rose leaves
Oil on canvas board 5" x 7" NFS

I am really diggin' the progress I am making of late. This little study is a gift for someone, hopefully they enjoy it, not my most accurate painting I have done to date but I like the looseness and the mood of this little painting. I especially like adding natural objects in my still life paintings which I use to lead the eye around the painting and really helps soften the overall look against what are normally hard edge objects and adds some randomness which for the most part are quite symmetrical.

Vase with leaves

Title: Vase with Leaves
Oil on Canvas Board 5" x 7" NFS

Little still life of a vase and leaves is the smallest painting I have done to date, really fun to paint and this painting has been claimed by my significant other. Although this painting is pretty small it does appear larger than it is

Brass waterjug with apple

Title: Brass water jug with apple
Oil on wrapped canvas 12" x 16"

Found this Brass jug a while back, I tried painting it a few times before but just wasn't working out, this is the 2nd painting of this composition, I tried a smaller version first, it turned out OK but wanted to try again so here it is. I have been putting in practice some if the elements I learned in the workshop I attended a couple weeks back and it has taken my work to a new level, really happy with my progress this month.

back from my Elizabeth Robbins workshop

Hey bloggies me again, So I just finished up a workshop with Elizabeth Roibbins and wow, can this women paint and turns out a wonderful teacher as well. The workshop was 4 full days of painting and instruction and tips and techniques, I learned so much from and her and I am really grateful I had the opportunity to study with her.

Her process if quite a bit different then mine so I struggled quite a bit for the first few days, I wasn't that concerned as I was more interested in the concepts then producing a masterpiece in the workshop.

Once things started to click I had an easier time of it, still my brain is full and may take months to digest everything but I have already seen improvement in my work, a lot of things she pointed out where things I had heard of but had no idea how to implement, or even things I had never heard of, like a light was switched on. At one point she pointed at one of my subjects and said see this, and as she said it it came into focus, way excelente.

Anyway enjoy, these are for sale please inquire in your are interested as I haven't added these to paypal yet.

Over the weekend I was showing my work as part of the Mississauga Art Society Fall show, went OK for me lots of compliments and chatted with quite a few people and then painted this as a demo Sunday afternoon, big crowd formed around me, but managed to stay focused and thankfully I didn't botch it. The best part was this little girl must have been about 4 years old watched me paint for some time in started to clap for me when I used pick in the foreground, after she said goodbye and blow me a little kiss, So sweet.

Sisters

Title: Sisters
Medium: Oil on wood panel  9" x 12"

Howdy folks, been a while, I have been painting, mostly plein-air about 1 or 2 times a week for the last month or so, with varied results, some turn out most do not, but I am learning so that's the main thing.

Most of my work in the field looks OK outside but when I bring them in, they end up way to dark, so I continue to figure that out, this one is one of the better ones so far, it was a great day to be out, love painting rocks, and the fall colours are starting to come in. Plan to go to the same spot next week, hopefully the leaves will still be on the trees

Art in the park September 23rd

Hey so I have been noticeably absent of late, not much time for painting as I have been preparing for the art in the park show tomorrow, have my own booth for the first time ever, weather my be an issue but at least I will inside a barn out of the rain. So exciting, lined up all my work yesterday and I am really pleased how all my piece look together.

The image in this post are 4" x 6" Art cards I have made up for the show, really turned out great, for those budget minded individuals, who is interested in my work but can't afford an original, if you interested let me know, I had a small number produced for the show but can have more made up.

So if you are in Mississauga tomorrow come by and visit me and my booth would love to see you and chat for a bit. Hopefully the weather holds, like I said I am in a barn so my booth should be nice and dry.

Cheers

Yellow Plum and Peach

Title: Yellow Plum and Peach Oil on 9" x 12" wood panel

This one sat on my easel for the better part of a week and because I have been most of my painting outside of late, took a while to get this one finished. I thing I noticed about pain
ting outside is I have yet to achieve the colour intensity I can get with my still-life paintings but I am sure that will come in time.

The plum has some translucency to it which proved to be difficult to achieve but all in all I am happy with it. What do you think?

Still River

Title: Still River, Oil on 9" x 12" Masonite

Went out on Location the other day to a local park that the Credit River runs through, this portion of the river is a small section where it branches off from the main river and is quite low and muddy hence the warm brown tones for water, I was arguing with myself over this one as were all told water is blue so it took all my strength to actually paint it the way it was, I did add a bit of blue here and there just to make me feel a little better about it.

Currently this one is not for sale as someone has expressed interest in this piece.

Lavender 9" x 12" Oil on Masonite

Here's another painting from my last outing at Port Credit harbour. Painting outside is still a mystery for me, but I am sticking with it, may figure it out in time. The day was so bright that this one came out fairly dark, but at least it's consistent throughout the painting so I am OK with that.

Lighthouse

Title: Lighthouse Oil on 9" x 12" Masonite.

Hey so, I have finally been out on location painting, been out twice in the last 2 weeks, this is a local scene in Mississauga, Port credit harbour.  I have got together with a few art buddies and we go out 1 a week, so exciting.

Painting outdoors is quite a bit different from studio painting, light changes so fast normally I take my time getting my lighting and values sorted out but if you do this outside the scene has changed so drastically you may as well start over, not to mention the colours I mixed up came out rather dark because of how bright it was outside. Anyway the spot we chose this time is quite busy so lots of people watching us paint and offering words of encouragement.

Currently this isn't for sale as someone has shown interest in this one,

Cherries

Cherries - Oil on 11" x 14" wood panel $350

Was out earlier in the day, Plein-air painting, when I got home was still in the mood to paint, found these great cherries cooling in the fridge. My first ever plein air painting didn't turn out so well, but I was warned before hand that things are quite a bit different in the field, sure enough, the atmosphere changed so fast, and before I knew it things just got away from me, still I loved getting outside and will be heading on on Friday with a few new art buddies.

Creamer

Title: Creamer 12" x 12" Oil on wood panel

Hey what's happening?

Sorry for the delay, see this one has been finished for quite sometime and just getting this up for every one to see. Hey so I learned something with this painting. All these years I have been struggling with white objects and it turns out we have been lied to, turns out white isn't white at all., apart from the highlights on the dairy creamer being white or an off-white as in this case, white is actually being influenced by everything else around it, including lighting influences. Hm. If this little tidbit helps at least one person than my job here is complete.

Plums

Plums 12" x 12" Oil on wood panel $275.00

For those of you that follow me, you may have noticed I haven't posted in a while, I have been going through quite the artist block at the moment, I have been painting but haven't been able to get through a whole painting in the last month, I am not exactly why but I guess it's not uncommon, just been really frustrating, anyway managed to get through one finally.

So enjoy as I don't now when I may get another one up. No worries I am sure things will turn around, I will just keep plugging away.

Hi bloggies

I have been in a funk the last little while so no new paintings to show, not sure what it is but I am sure it will pass. Since I haven't painted in a while I thought I should post something. Anyway Last week I took all my objects that have been hanging around my studio taking up much needed space, turned out to be quite a few, into the local thrift store, kept 1 or 2 things but everything went bye bye. While I dropped off all the items I picked up 8 new ones that peaked my interest. Anyway so since it's been a while I thought I would post a sketch of some of my new objects, I set this up last week and it sitting there waiting for me to paint. although you can't tell from the sketch the colours on these objects are awesome, not sure why I haven't started this yet.
It could be I am already stuck and I haven't even started yet, so it could be there is something not working with this at the moment, guess I better figure out what it is.

My drawing skills are a bit rusty but I have begun to sketch out my ideas more and more of late so I am getting a little better but mainly I am sketching for value and help clarify so true likeness isn't on the top of my list. I find this easier for me if I do a quick sketch and figure out what may go wrong before I get to painting. Planning planning and more planning.

Camera Shy

Title: Camera Shy, Oil on wood $150.00 Painting is 7.25" x 11.25,
Overall size is Finished size is 11.75" x 16" Framed.

This piece started out quite a bit different then my original sketch, I had a few other objects on the left, 1 was an apple, which was probably the oddest shaped apple I had ever seen but it didn't translate well, and the right side had such a nice feel that I had to change my focus. Glad I stuck with it.

Hey how are you all.

Hey how are you all.

Well it's been an interesting week, didn't paint a darn thing this week, just went by so fast, lots of other things on the go but not really sure what that was, I found out this week one of my paintings I entered into for the Colour and Form Society Biennial Members’ Show and Open Juried Exhibition (by the way that means every 2 years) for those that didn't know, me included. anyway the chosen piece is "Little Brass Cup" seen here. This year the show is being held at Todmorden Mills Heritage Museum and Arts Centre from May 24 – June 18, 2012.

I have also been officially accepted into the Mississauga Art Society, with 25+ members, this gives me the opportunity to have my work shown in at least 2 shows a year which is great not only that we meet every couple of weeks to go over business and chat and paint and so on including a paint out or 2, so exciting.

Today I am at home waiting for the phone "NOT" to ring, I submitted 2 paintings to the Lakeshore Arts juried show today and if they are selected they will "NOT" call me to let me know between 5pm and 7 pm .

Last weekend I finally went out and bought a Jullian French easel so I am finally set to get outside and paint, I am a little intimated by it however, so many questions, also the first time I go out I would rather not be watched by anyone, as I really don't know what I am doing.

Have a happy Mother's day to all this applies to.

Title: Shinning Star, Oil on wood $150.00 Painting is 7.25" x 11.25
Overall size is Finished size is 11.75" x 16"

I finished this a few days ago but didn't get a chance to post until now. More metal and a apple. Hey so last night I met with a local art society here in town to have them consider me as a member and showed them some of my work and had a impromptu presentation and Q&A afterwards, 1 of my worst fears as a kid was public speaking but maybe I have outgrown it as I just stood in front of everybody and talked for about 10 to 15 minutes, my mom would have been proud god rest her soul. Mid way through the night I was asked to join as they were very impressed with my work, Cool. Once everything is official I will update you.

Red delicious

Red delicious - Oil on wood $150.00

This painting is actually painted on a cabinet door front, the local hardware store got a shipment of these things in and was selling them off for cheap, just my kind of thing, high quality wood and study solid frame. painting is 7.25" x 11.25" kind of weird size but it came already framed, just painted the panel on the inside and put a clear oil stain on the outside and bam! Finished size is 11.75" x 16". This setup was a bit of a challenge, more than I thought it would be but turned out alright.

Medium: Oil on Masonite 12" x 16" - $400.00

Yet another metal object, love painting reflections, so much fun. You may notice that this painting has a different feel from the previous one that's because for something different I used a No. 14 filbert brush for the whole thing, which kept me from getting to involved with details which can really get me bogged down.

Silver Waterjug

Title: Silver water jug
Medium: Oil on Masonite 12" x 16" - $400.00

So my lovely wife finally made it back from here travels, so I was able to upload a photo finally. Oh and it's great to have her back of course, no more cereal or hotdogs for dinner. I know what you thinking but when she is here I do most of the evening meals when she is away I just don't feel like going through all the trouble of preparing a great meal for 1.

I have been working on Masonite for a month of 2 now and really like it the paint sits on the surface and takes so long to dry which of course brings it's own challenges but I love it for now. I do have a huge stockpile of wood panels to go use up first as I have run out of Masonite boards but I will revisit them again soon. Love changing things up now and then really challenges me to move forward. Speaking of which this week I will be getting a easel to paint on location so excited.

When the Cat is away

The mouse will play, isn't that the saying, well my lovely wife is exploring the world, well maybe not the world but she is away on a business trip and behaving herself I'm told, guess I should too. Don't say anything to her but I did have cereal for dinner last night. She left Saturday and I painted all day Sunday, and had a great session and finished the painting the same day, wish I could show you but she took the camera so I have to wait until she gets home to snap a pic and post it. Seem to be on an upswing at the moment so I have to take advantage so just about to start another long session today, put on a pot of coffee and just finished lunch, put on some great music and I am ready to get at it, wish me luck.

Have a great day

Marty Nomination Link

As per my last post Voting has commenced for the People's choice award for the Marty's here in Mississauga, and can be found here, So excited, the winners of each category are chosen by the art council of course but I guess they reward the person with the most friends, anyway you can vote for me if you wish or you can visit the website and check out all the nominees. I thought each person would get their own space for people to check out each visual artists work but doesn't seem to at the moment.

Not much painting going on right at the moment, but I had my eye on a few things, so in the next day or 2. I should have something to post, was busy today getting my entry form ready and selecting work for a few juried shows here in town but did spend some time experimenting mixing colours and painting little squares. Much needed exercise as I sometimes have a bit of trouble making that perfect colour.

Persistence

Title: Persistence - Oil on 16" x 20" Masonite

So far those that have followed a bit of the progress with this one I named this one persistence, as I could have scraped this early on but I kept at it. I decided to keep the left side fairly minimal, I have to admit I really liked it when the left side of this painting was bare but thought it needed a little something, so I added the ceramic ball and used slight warm and cool colour shifts to break up the solid block of colour, which seemed stark. This really turned out a lot different then when I started and I was quite discouraged with it but carried on and I am pleased with the final result.

I have a piece of exciting news, every year the Arts council of Mississauga honors local artists in various areas of culture and the arts called the Marty awards, and I have been nominated for the Emerging Visual Artist category, not sure how significant this is but it is a pretty big event here in Mississauga, and hopefully gives me some much needed exposure. Page can be found here In the coming days each nominee gets there own page  winners of each category are chosen by the council but there is popular vote component for peoples choice award.

Apple - metal bowl update

Thanks Kim and "like a sunflower in a pickle jar" - Interesting name. Here is an updated photo, I tried yet again to paint the 3 other objects on the left side but it is still throwing me for a loop for the forth time. so after wiping it again I decided I was stressing over the black empty space so I decided to add some colour and think about it, I removed the offending objects and I will try something else as the painting as it stands is a little off balance as you can see.

So tonight I will see what I can come up with and hopefully have something to show tomorrow afternoon, we can always hope.

Have a great day

April 2nd update

Maybe not the most inspiring blog post title, sorry for that, So the opening night at the Beaux-Arts Brampton was really nice and made a nice connection with a local artist, we have been juried into the same shows of late and finally met each other, a wonderful artist and really great person and she has persuaded me to go out Plein Air painting with her soon, can't wait, always wanted to try it.

So speaking of juried shows, I have 3 coming up that I want to enter so I am busy working away, and here is my latest painting I am working on,

Now I don't normally work on 1 object at a time, with this 1 it just looks that way, I like to work all around the painting blocking in all my shapes first sorting out values and such, but this one has been problematic from the get go, I have wiped the entire left side 3 times now and don't seem to be getting any closer to a solution, not sure what to do about it, as I am getting pretty discouraged with it. I am actually thinking about grabbing my circular saw and trimming of the left side of this one. I don't think I will actually do it but it's tempting.

Anywho, I will try again tomorrow, but first I will paint something else, something smaller to get warmed up.

Have a good night

Apples with Vases

Hey Folks, here is the latest painting to come off the easel.

Apple with Vases Oil on 16" x 20" Masonite. $500.00

I have been working a little larger of late, mainly for a bunch of juried shows coming up, they tend to do better for me and don't get hung in a corner or over the garbage can once they are in. You may remember my Painting "Stacked Blue cups" from a while ago, it was juried into a show starting this week, at Beaux arts Brampton annual show, opening night is this Friday, so exciting.

Still life painting "Vessels"

Good day folks,

Here is my latest painting, and I used my last piece of Masonite, this one may not be a strong as the last 2 but it does have some strong points, I had plateaued there for a while so with these last 3 paintings looks like I may have turned a corner, I love changing my process or materials every so often as it forces me to really focus.

Little Brass Cup

Title: Little Brass cup, Oil on 9" x 12" Masonite.

This is the 2nd painting I have done on Masonite, and I love how fast the surface is, paint just slides around so easily, it forces me to use a fair amount of paint to get good coverage. I chose to keep my setup similar to the last painting, and I have 1 more in mind so expect more of the same.

friend + bear hug = cracked rib

Well title says it all I suppose, My mate I hadn't seen in a  while, was so happy to see me he grabbed me and gave me a big bear hug, but at a odd angle and squeezed until I heard a pop, and now I am nursing a suspected cracked rib or perhaps just popped out of place either way, hurts a bit that's for sure. Luckily it's getting a bit better as time goes on but slowly.

Anyway doesn't keep me from painting so I am just about to tackle my next piece have it all sketched out, and ready to put paint to Masonite once again, liked the slickness of the surface with my last painting so I would try it again. Always good to try something new every once in awhile, helps me move forward in my work. I was reading the other day that to really excel at painting or anything else for that matter you need to spend about 10,000 hours at it, seems like a really long time doesn't it, I think I am about1/10 of the way there if I estimate so I better get cracking.

Talk to you soon

Blue Vase with apples

Title: Blue Vase with apples
Oil on Masonite 9 x12  -  $250.00

Well after much thought and looking, I have decided to that this piece is finished, as I am not sure I can do anything more to it to improve it so it is complete, and should take quite a while to fully dry. This painting has a really nice look to it, great colours, experimented a bit using some different colour combinations.

Blue vase wip

Good evening, I got some time this afternoon to paint, about 4 hours or so, I choose to work a little smaller 9 x 12 for this one, as an experiment I am using Masonite for this one, also I have used a fair amount of paint way more then I would normally use, by the end of my painting session, I was covered from head to toe. I don't know if any of my painting friends here have used Masonite with oils but it's painting on glass, even with a nice coat of gesso on top. As you can imagine working fine details is a bit of a challenge as the paint moves around so easily but so far so good, I think I will stop for the night as I have an early start tomorrow but should be able to finish this up after.

Cheers and comment welcome

Wee Butterfly

Title: Wee Butterfly
Oil on Wood 16" x 20" $500.00

This painting took a long time to develop many things on the go, I think I spent more time just looking at then painting. I think over the next week I will pick up a bunch of new props. The other day I was in one of those big box hardware stores and they were selling unfinished cabinet doors so I picked up a bunch for cheap, look like framed wood panels, can't wait to use them.

March 2nd update

Happy March everyone, I just realized it's been quite a while since I have made a post and thought all of you may be wondering what I have been doing, well for the last 2 weeks I have had a few things going on, 1 of which is I joined a a group called "Artists looking for empty walls" here in town, it's a small group and have a few shows a year in a historical house in Mississauga called the Grange, the first show I will be a part of is starting this Tuesday so I spent a few days picking a few pieces, it's a Themed show based on Spring, so I choose a few older pieces so it meant putting them in frames, I have no idea what the show will look like but it's a great concept for local artists with no where to hang their art and apparently they do generate a lot of traffic.

We are also having some renovations done in the house, although it has been relatively quite it is happening right beside my studio which does make it difficult to paint at times, anyway there are almost finished and everything looks great so I am not complaining. That aside I did start a new painting, but have been struggling with it from the get go, seems to be the norm, of late, but I continue on.

I have been trying to figure out why I have been struggling with my paintings of late and I think maybe it has to do a little with size this one is 16 x 20, maybe I am out of my comfort zone, not to often I work at this size so perhaps that's it.

I have a question for all the artists that view this post and that is, how often do you give up on a painting and wipe it clean or scrap it and start something else? I think the percentage of finished paintings for me seems to be around 75% make it to completion. Just curious.

Anyway I must be off.
Cheers

Turnip Royale

Title: Turnip Royale
Medium: Oil on 11" x 14" wood panel $350.00

So here is the final version of this painting, before I started I had planned to do a complete white study but changed my mine just before I started, I pumped up the colour contrast a bit I also added a purple piece of paper under the objects which is hidden due to the eye level view this was to to cast purple reflections on everything.

turnips wip cont'd

Just a quick update before I call it a night, were getting there, by the time I get back to this it may be late in the afternoon tomorrow, hopefully it won't be dried out by then. I love the colour interaction with using compliments, so pleasing to the eye.

Cheers

Turnip wip

Here is my current painting on my easel, spent about 2 hours on this so far this afternoon, managed to block in all major areas, but started to struggle a bit after painting the turnip with the white sugar bowl and lid, probably not very recognizable at the moment but trust me that's what the are. So I am stopping for a bit to regain my composure, as it's getting close to dinner time, and I guess it won't make it's self apparently.  If I build up enough courage I will get back to this later tonight and post again but if not maybe post tomorrow afternoon.

Til then

Really it's Wednesday?

Wow where did the week go already, This past weekend I participated in the annual VAM members Valentine's day show, they added a new element this year, "Best in Show" which would be displayed for an extra week at the VAM headquarters in Mississauga. It was a nice event but again, wasn't selected for the best in show, a really lot of great artists here in town so there was quite a few nice pieces to choose from. Just means I still have some work to do. Someone I met while picking up my painting at the closing on Sunday said I should have been included which was nice of her to say as she has some really nice work.

Well, so it's Wednesday and I have yet to pick up a brush this week, I have been a bit busy with the business end of painting, picking up supplies and items to paint, and I joined something here in town called ALFEW (artists looking for empty walls) this membership allows me to participate in at 4 themed shows a year, ,mostly small venues from what I can see but at least this gives me chance to show my work on a regular basis and meet with other local artists and maybe generate a few sales here and there along the way.

So I think I will sketch out my next painting tonight and get to it, I have quite a few hours blocked in for painting tomorrow and Friday, wish me luck

He's standing right behind me isn't he?

Title: He's standing right behind me isn't he? Oil on 11" x 14" wood panel $350

Well I tried to remember the lessons learned from my last failed painting, and I wanted to make sure I stayed focused with this one, paying attention to value and colour relationships and thankfully this came together really quickly, with no real reworking involved. Love the way this pear looked when I picked it up, looked like it was on fire as 1 side is a very warm orange.

No one left behind - update

Well, I know I said I would continue on with my latest painting but upon much reflection and analysis of it I have decided that this one has a date with a camp fire at later date. Should burn up good too as I use wood panels with oil.

I have been struggling from the start and now I know why, I had been readjusting ellipses and perspective over and over and it just wasn't working out, I was missing the obvious in that it just wasn't planned out very well and it was doomed even before I started to paint. Let that be a lesson for everyone, planning is probably the most important step to any painting. Anyway I have prepped a bunch of new panels this morning so looking forward to moving on.

This week I got my letter from the colour and form society and was sad to find out I hadn't be selected to join there group, oh well maybe next year. Visual Arts Mississauga is holding there annual Valentine's day show this coming weekend so I am getting my submission ready today.

Talk to you soon

No one left behind.

So it's I had a bit more time to put into my latest painting and I did manage to work through some of the issue I am having with it so it is coming along, I have never really been stuck on a painting for such a long time, but after starring at it for the last few days I have an idea on what's going on with it. My plan for going forward with this is to do a little each day and work through this one, I thought about just putting it away and reusing the panel for something else, but I have decided to make a learning experience out of it, I may turn out OK but then again it may not, but at least I will gain something from it either way.

Enjoy and if you have any ideas let me know, as comments or critiques are always welcome.
