Blue Bottle final

Title: Blue Bottle
Medium: Oil on 16 x 20 wood panel

This piece is a little larger than I usually work on but it came together really quickly for a change, it hasn't changed very much from the first post the other day, however there where a few structure issues that I needed to address as well as some value changes for a bit of clarity. I love this blue bottle such a great colour, before I started this one, I was watching some YouTube videos from some artists I like and most had a similar way of painting and so I thought I would try and the way they painted, so I used a soft bristle brush for most of this and pushed the paint around and blended a little more but did managed to keep some broad brush stokes in there, overall it has a nice soft feel to it.

I have had some issues photographing this one however, as it has been raining for the last few days so I couldn't take it out to take a photo.

On another note, I am really excited as I entered a juried show with the Colour and Form Society, I submitted 2 paintings and imagine my surprise both where selected today, the show runs from November 3rd to the 25th with the opening reception on November 6th from 2 to 5 pm, so if you are in the area stop by it is at ETOBICOKE CIVIC CENTRE ART GALLERY @ 399 The West Mall, Etobicoke.

Blue bottle

My latest painting currently in development, what a frenzy it was yesterday, spent about 6 hours locked in my studio and here is the result, On my way home yesterday I stopped at the Salvation army thrift store and ransacked there store shelf's and picked up about 15 new items to paint, woohoo. It's almost complete I have a few things to tidy up, not much mind you. I will expand on the process later, it's late so I am pretty much done for today

So if you see something that I may have overlooked maybe even some wonderful words of encouragement feel free to let me know.

Vase with apple

Medium: Oil on 11 x 14 wood panel  - price $350.00

So here it is, a long time in coming I suppose. Time to move on to something new. This one proved to be difficult as I pointed out in my last blog post but I did manage to get to a point where I am happy with it and willing to share with everybody. I am learning lots this last little while as I struggle through my paintings of late so I guess that counts for something. I have a juried show to enter this weekend as I mentioned before, I can enter 2 paintings, 1 of which I have chosen but still stuck on a 2nd, really looking forward to it.

still life work in progress

Been a tough week for me painting wise yet again, having a bit of trouble concentrating for some reason, I started a painting earlier in the week but it went from bad to worse and then back to bad again, so i wiped it clean and grabbed another wood panel, seems like the more I paint the harder it becomes, maybe my expectations are getting higher, who knows. This one has been a tough fight as well but it is turning out a little better than the last, the photo is a bit washed out and a wee bit on the red side but it will have to do for now, still have to work out some colour but the values are coming along. Any thoughts?

On another note this week I met 2 people, 1 an artist and 1 an art collector at different times of course and both said to me I should have a show very soon, so it got me thinking, this of course was the plan after all but I always thought I wasn't ready or I need more work or what if I have a show and nobody shows up.

I have been looking into various locations and think I found 1 that may be suitable, and I have to book at least 6 months in advance. This should give me ample time to prepare, So I may go ahead with it and have a show in the spring. I will keep you posted.

it's Monday

Ya it's Monday, another fun filled week of painting, dogs and whatever life tosses my way, so far so good, didn't paint over the weekend, a bit busy this weekend. I went on something called Lakeshore art trail here in Mississauga and talked to a few local artists which was nice and made a few connections. My latest art buyer showed up Sunday to pick her her new bundle of joy (painting of course), showed her my studio and all my paintings, she was so thrilled. She purchased her painting online so I was a little nervous that it may have not been exactly what she wanted but when she saw it for the first time she was over the moon. So that was a great experience.

Currently setting up for my next painting, saw this great yellow delicious apple today and brought it home, been about a month since I last painted one so I think it time once again. I think a compliment to "time to reflect" as I like to do a few of a similar subject.

I am also in the process of redoing my website again, trying to simplify it a bit, going so slowly.

Red Square

Title: Red square
Medium: Oil on 9 x 12 wood panel - $250 cdn

The Red in this is a lot more vibrant than it shows here, I usually photograph my paintings outside in the sunlight but it's been raining here for 2 days and looks like it's not going to let up so I took a pic indoors, it's close but not quite but you get the idea. I am thinking about building my own light box, looks simple enough as I have seen a few examples online perhaps next week.

This Tea pot was hiding out in the basement hiding in a box in the corner, what an awesome colour (yes spell checker a "u" in colour, I am Canadian) and oh so shiny, I love ceramics.

On another note I have been neglecting a few things around here, I think I need an assistant. One of which is my website. I really need to take the weekend and focus on getting everything up to date. When I first redesigned I really didn't think it through very well, not so easy to add content for me so I may have to redesign my redesign.

red teapot wip

Ohhh Red, Still in the early stages, a little past the blocking in stage though, It may not show very well as the lighting isn't the greatest outside of my staging area but boy is the tea pot red, almost used straight cad red from the tube but I heard my old art teacher and painters from around the world say "no you can't do that, Have you gone completely mad?". Well I did for most but created a nice fire engine red for the brightest spot so as it seemed a bit cool at first so it should be fine right?

I will be able to get back to this fairly early tomorrow so expect a final post sometime tomorrow.

Cheers and have a good night.

Autumn Gathering

Title: Autumn Gathering
Medium: Oil on 9 x 12 wood panel

So here we go, the final version, this one started of terribly but I managed to coral this on back in with much persistence, After the bad start which I narrow down to not focusing enough on observation and poor color choices of the bat, used a few colors I wouldn't normally use and they turned out to be very transparent and wouldn't except any sort of layering on top of them, very annoying but learned lots. Funny thing though just after my last blog post talking about the tough time I had things turned around just like that.

Gourds 2 wip

Well today is fantastic outside, shouldn't be in the studio I suppose. but here I find myself. Days like this I wish I was a landscape painter. I now I said I would try and get outside this year but it hasn't happen yet, maybe next year.

Well things turned around a bit since my last post, the white gourd in the foreground took all of 5 minutes to put down, compared to 2 days for everything else, go figure, hopefully this trend continues. I managed to pull this one back from the brink and no longer fear this anymore. If all goes I should be able to post a final version soon, time will tell.

Hi Folks.

It's been a hard week thus far in regards to painting. It started off great with a sale so I was in great spirits, thanks again to the new owner of one of my paintings. Currently I am working on a 11 x 14 painting of some more guards, which went off the rails really quickly, after blocking in most of the piece it just didn't work for me, colors and value just weren't working so after a day much fiddling and repainting I scrubbed off all of it. So I started again and again it just wasn't working but instead of scrubbing it off I just blended everything using a soft brush which created a nice blur effect. I then started to focus on some objects and again after a day of fiddling I scrubbed the object away that I was working on, But I am persistent if nothing else so I haven't given up, I may just chop this up to a learning experience and take what I can from it, sort of liberating, in a bizarre kind of way.

It's a little embarrassing at the moment so I won't post a wip until I can work out some of the issues I am having. Must focus!

I guess likes like that some times, Cheers
