Watermelon and peppers

Title: Watermelon and peppers
Medium: Oil on 9 x 12 Masonite

Yet another watermelon study, love the rich colors and there not too bad to eat as well. the 2 peppers are from the garden, Hungarian hot peppers, probably the hottest pepper I have ever had, although I didn't know when I tried one for the first time, good thing I was standing over the sink, as I had to drink buckets of water afterwards, still not bad got a few more to eat. I tend to paint using a 1/2 filbert brush but broke out 1 at 3/8 for this as well, felt weird. I have been working a lot lately on value, composition and trying to work in some transitional colors it's a hard fight but I am making progress, which I am really pleased with, hopefully my viewers are as well.

Watermelon slice by Dave Froude

Title: Watermelon Slice
Medium: Oil on 9 x 12 Masonite

I have really slowed down of late, well until this painting, 1st time using Masonite with Oil, so slick and doesn't dry very fast, if at all, which was a bit of a challenge to work with but I got it to work after a while. This was the last piece in the fridge and with all this hot weather I better get to the local store to pick up some more before my Wife comes home.

St John's Wort 2 by Dave Froude

Title: St John's Wort Flower 2
Medium: Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas panel

I started this painting a few days back, I hadn't picked up a brush for a couple of weeks for various reasons which I won't get into as it really wouldn't make very good reading so not to bore you, I had a spot of trouble figuring this one out but finally got to something I am pleased with, had some issues with values. Skills are coming but slower than I would have hoped. This will be my last painting on canvas panel at least for now, when I was at the Toronto Outdoor art expo I talked to a few painters I admired and found most where using wood panels or hardboard so I am going to give them a whirl, this will eliminate the need for frames as they are thick enough to attach a hanging wire on the back.

Anyway, I will be working a look in the next few days, but I have been eying a watermelon in the fridge, it is slowly disappearing so I better get on it quick before it disappears.

Enjoy

I'm Still here

Been a busy couple of weeks for me, been working a lot at my part time gig, turning out to be more of a full time thing, lots of people taking vacation time so that leaves me to hold down the fort I suppose, more than happy to do it as my dogs need me, but it does eat into my painting time. I have also been working in the back yard regrading the lawn as the level sloped toward the house. So nine yards of soil later and new sod to go on top and bam instant lawn, sort of.

I went to Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition this weekend, very inspiring, had a chance to visit with some artist and chat a bit, didn't want to take up too much of their time as they were quite busy but it was great to see all the great work, something to aspire to perhaps next year I will apply. If you read this today (Sunday) I suggest you visit if you are in the area. 1 Artist I really enjoyed talking to was Catherine Jeffrey, I follow here blog but here paintings are so much more vibrant and powerful in person.

Looks as though I have the rest of today and tomorrow to sit behind my easel finally, so look for a painting in the nest couple of days

Until then
Dave
