Vase at a distance

Title: Vase at a distance
Medium: Oil on 10 x 12 Canvas panel

You may have noticed that my updates have been a bit sparse of late, this is for a few reasons, one my morning job has been expanding a bit into the afternoons and over the weekends so this hasn't left much time to sit down and paint as often as I would like, but I have to pay the bills and my Dog's need me, so that's how it goes sometimes. The other reason is I have been going through a book I bought called Mastering Composition by Ian Roberts, which is great and he points out a lot of information to keep in mind while painting from start to finish which I had been omitting in my work, I haven't gone through the whole book yet but I have read has made a huge difference already in my last few paintings.

Here is another example, although the objects are a bit far away the point for me was to create a strong composition and value study, to lead the viewer through the painting. I think I will do this one again, but this time I will zoom in a little.

Enjoy

Tie goes to the Apple by Dave Froude

Title: Tie goes to the apple
Medium: Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel

The title is a baseball term just in case you didn't know. I have been working on planning my paintings out before hand paying attention to light, composition and value, overall the results are much better I don't struggle as much, I have also slowed down a bit when painting and always stand back every so often to make sure everything is going as planned, oddly enough this has made the whole process faster. Only took a few years or trial and error to figure it out, silly me, anyway enjoy

Apple and Vase

Title: Apple and Vase
Medium: Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel

Hey I am still here, worked on this one for a about 3 days on and off, starting to get a better handle of Oil paint, trying not to rush and create a big muddy mess, sometimes it works sometimes not . ;)

This painting here is a result of conversation I had over the weekend regarding painting structure, composition, value and focus, although not perfect I feel it is a step in the right direction, at least I hope it is.

Anyway Comments welcome

lime reflections by Dave Froude

Title: lime reflections
Medium: Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas panel

Hi folks, Well blogger was down for a while so I didn't get a chance to update for a spell but here is my latest painting.

I entered a painting into a juried show and unfortunately it wasn't selected but I did get a critique from one of the jurors which was great and she gave me some wonderful feedback, although it was a tough assessment it was what I needed to hear, gave me lots of feedback and pointed out many things that I need to improve upon, mostly it came down to composition, and placement. Although The juror was tough she was very encouraging.

Cups and shells oil painting by Dave Froude

Title: Cups and Shells
Medium: Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas Panel

Finally as promised here is Cups and Shells, this one spent a long time on my easel, had a spot of trouble with values for a spell but I think I worked through it. Still may do some work on this in a week or 2 so I am not putting this one up for sale just yet but of you are interested in this one email me before I make any changes.

I was out the other day and dropped off a lot of my objects I have painted over the years to goodwill and picked up some new ones, mostly shiny metal objects and some colored glass vases, as you can see I used a few here already, but I need to get a bunch more, can't wait to go back, I love hitting the Thrift store and such, really great stuff to paint and it helps so many people out.

Struggle continues

Happy Wednesday everyone, I am here and continue to paint daily but the transition to oil is a struggle but I do love a challenge, I am about 1/2 way through a painting that I started the other day. Hopefully things go my way today and I can finally post something this week. I am finding I have to learn to paint all over again and take a different approach with oil. I find it a challenge to layer colors over each other without them blending into each other, I have watch some demos from well known artist and they make it look so easy. I will not give up though as I do love it just taking a while so thanks for your patience.

More later.

Cheers

This week I was making my selection for a juried show coming up, deadline for the entry form is tomorrow and I have made my selection and sent off my entry form today, the painting I selected was Blue Vase and tangerines and it framed and ready for the show, drop off and jury selection is next weekend, wish me luck.

Bottles and apple

Title: Bottles and Apple
Medium: Oil on 9 x 12 Canvas panel
Well here it is my first ever attempt using Oil colors, what a way different animal than acrylics that's for sure. I chose to work on a similar setup to my last painting which was done using acrylics so I could get a feel for the differences, My lovely wife wasn't so big on the beer bottle I used in the last so I grabbed an old standby "Apple". I love the way Oil covers on the first coat so opaque even with a thin layer, what would have taken me several coats with acrylics went down with 1 swipe.
Anyway I would be  interested in Hearing what people think of this one, One thing that really through me for a loop was the long drying time, still trying to get my head around that.
