Blast from the past

Title:
Medium: Watercolor 24 x 34 not for sale

No new painting to post today, instead I thought I would post the very first painting I attempted about 2.5 years ago after 15 years absence. Although I would paint this a little differently today, still pretty good for a first attempt I think anyway, you may think differently however, and that's ok. I got my feet wet with watercolor for the first little while and now have been working solely with Acrylic but may try a few oils in near future.

The reason there isn't a new painting is because I have been reorganizing my studio as I had works all over the place, I put up a bunch of little shelves to get 30 paintings off the floor and more visible for those who visit. I would be interested to find out how other artists store there paintings, as I can't be the only one with storage issues, or maybe I am.

Fluorescent pepper - Yum

Title: Fluorescent pepper
Medium: Acrylic on 10 x 12 canvas board

I thought I would take a break from my dishes phase for a while, while I enjoy the subject I thought it time to move on to something else for a while, so with that being said here is my latest still life, when I bought this pepper the other day it seemed to be it's own light source, spotted it half way across the store.

This took a little extra time as I had first set it up to take up almost the whole frame but was just to big and was looking like one big orange spot on the canvas I also adjusted the lighting as it just wasn't working, just not enough definition for my liking.

For a challenge I used 3 different colored fabrics, Blue to contrast with the yellow-orange and red for the green shadows.

Study in white

Title: Study in white
Acrylic medium on canvas board 10 x 12

I was looking around my studio yesterday and saw some of my earlier attempts at some light creme or white colored objects and thought I could stand to put in a little more time on these, so here is my latest attempt. Never really occurred to me til yesterday or at least wasn't apparent, that these white objects have quite a bit of color to them from all the reflected light around, as a matter of fact the only white used where the bright spots. From a distance they do appear white.

In case you are wondering the yellow sphere is a candle sitting on top of the lid for the jar beside it.

Help! I'm stuck in a bowl

Title: Help! I'm stuck in a bowl
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas board 10 x 12

So for the last few days this one has been on my easel taunting me, I haven't been feeling very well, so I haven't painted very much. This is the 2nd time I have taken on these objects, and both times this has been a very difficult challenge for me, the light blue green of the bowl was hard for me to decipher, it wasn't until my wife said it looks like a robin's egg. Hmm how about that. This one was still a fight all the way through it, hopefully the next won't be so difficult.

As I said I wasn't feeling well the last couple of days and I found it hard to concentrate and focus on my subject, the only way I can describe it was my eyes seemed a bit blurring and where a bit slow to react, not to mention my head felt like it was going to explode.

That being said here it is in all it's glory.

3 Amigos

Title: 3 amigos
10 x 12 Acrylic

What a fun painting this was, I set this up last night but didn't get to it this afternoon, as I have been a little under the weather, so to keep my mind off how bad I am feeling I decided that I would work feverishly on this instead.

I am finding less is more. My previous work I tended to include as much detail as possible and try and complete an exact replica of whatever I was painting not let the viewer fill in the gaps, happily I have gotten away from that and I see my results are a lot better and tend to have more feeling and expression.

Green Apples Study 2

Title: Green Apple Study 2
10 x 12 Acrylic on canvas board

So it's apples again, started another painting yesterday morning but had to leave for a bit and when I came home I started to paint again, after a while I noticed the lighting had changed so dramatically over the few hours I was away that the painting was starting to look very odd and disjointed, so rather than start over I put it aside and may try again at some point. Oh well onward and upward.

So here is my latest apple study, I took a bit of a different approach to this one compared to the last. With this one I tried to stick with using compliment colors for shading and tried to stay rather loose with this one compared to the last. It may not be perfect but it was a joy to do and although some things didn't turn out like I thought it would I am pretty pleased with this one.

Green Apples Study

Title: Green Apples Study
Acrylic 10 x 12

This was a quick study yesterday afternoon as it was balmy -20C outside so I didn't venture out,  paint was flying all over the place, my cat almost included himself in this one but I managed to keep him away long enough. He usually likes to plop himself down right in the middle of whatever I am painting, guess he wants to be my next subject.

This one started out great, every brush stroke had meaning, half way through I started to lose it but gathered myself back up and continued on, I tend to get fixated on things so don't be surprised to see a few more like this one but need to get a few supplies first.

Apple 'n' friends

Title: Apple n Friends
Size 10 x 12 Acrylic

I stopped at the local Thrift store on my way home yesterday and they had these items sitting on the shelf, looking very lonely so I picked them up and brought them home, apart from the apple of course.

This painting look amazing in my head, but it fought me tooth and nail all day yesterday and today, I don't think anyone won the battle I think I will call this one a draw. Pastel colors tend to be a little difficult for me to decipher at times but I am getting better as time goes on. Loved painting the yellow background, I think I will do a few more.

Candle holder and apple

About this Painting
Title: Candle holder and apple;
Size: 10" x 12"
Medium: Acrylic on canvas board

As winter is upon us, thought I could use a bit of color today, as for the last few days I have been digging the cars out of the snow.

Love green apples, probably most favorite food. I always enjoy painting them however most of the time the don't stick around long enough to paint, as I tend to eat them straight away. Blue candle holder was fun to paint, very glossy with an orange terracotta undertone.

Kettle

Title: Kettle on Red
10 x 12 acrylic

Good Day.

So I thought a little change of pace today, I moved aside all my cups and bowls and painted this kettle I bought from the thrift store a couple weeks back, to tell you the truth I was a little hesitant to take this one on, so it sat for some time in the corner. While painting this I was thinking it was too dark, but I kept at it slowly adding in the reflections and highlights. I simplified it a little or else it would have turned into a self portrait. I was right to be a bit hesitant as this proved to be very challenging but I am glad I did attempt this.

we've got you surrounded.

Just a quick update today.

I liked the results of the last painting, I thought I would do another similar. This one took a lot longer to produce however, that's the way it goes sometimes. I have noticed over the last little while, my handling of white objects is getting better.

The other day I have noticed that as I continue to paint more and more the quality is steadily improving but most of all I have noticed I have been simplifying my paintings and getting into a rhythm, sometimes I find I slip back into my old ways but not as often but for the most part the end result seems to work out better,

Cups and Bowls

I was out picking up some supplies today and went through the oil paint section in the local art store, didn't buy anything just yet, had a look around and was thinking about picking up some water mixable oil as my studio is pretty close to my living quarters down the hall and I remember when I was younger using oil and the smell from the thinners and paint itself can be over powering to some. So I still need to investigate some more as there are a few brands to choose from.

Well, I am still on my dishes kick as I still have quite a few objects that I picked up at the thrift store the other week,  this painting took a toll, really struggled with parts of this one. I had planned to have this ready yesterday but some areas I had to do over and over, I usually am pretty calm and easy going but I just about tossed this one out of my studio window, luckily the painting didn't , just a brush or two. LOL.

I thought about refining this painting a little more but decided that it's done, trying to get away from sharp crisp lines. Sorry about the image quality, I just can't seem to get a good colour match with the camera I am using, always seems a bit washed out.

up against the wall

Can you believe this is my second post today who would have thought it.

Got time today to do another study in white, up close this may not look like cups, it does to me however, at a distance this comes together. I took a very graphic approach to this subject. I saw another painter do something similar  and for the life of me I can't remember who it was, anyway thought that it was a great idea so I set this one up, not quite an exact copy. White things still give me a spot of trouble but I am getting better, practice makes perfect I suppose. This composition is quite a departure for me, straight on shot and all in a line and set back a bit, but I like it all the same.

Cheers'

brown cup and glass

Not sure what it is exactly but these little brown cups seem to resonate with me, so much so I think I will paint these for a spell with other items of course, I seem to get into a rhythm and these last few paintings haven't taken very long to complete, perhaps this will carry over to some of the other items as I work. In the past I have struggled with colour but not with the last few paintings, I have been very decisive when it comes to putting colour down and haven't had to rework many areas, this tend to have a better outcome for me as I am not getting frustrated and just concentrate on painting.

So today is my last day of vacation, I will try and get another painting done today but my not as it looks as though things are piling up that I need to attend to. Tomorrow is out of the question for painting but after that I have quite a bit of time to devote to my easel.

Enjoy.

Happy new year!

Hi folks,

I hope everyone had a great and safe new year's eve and didn't wake up on New years day wondering what happen the night before.

I did manage to squeeze in a painting over the last 2 days, and have also set up the next painting, I like the direction my work is heading at the moment, while to do tend to struggle with them I am seeing progress and think I will stick with my current subject matter for the foreseeable future.

This painting turned out ok, not exactly what I thought it would turn out like in my head but still ok, I noticed once I had finished that the drawing got away from my a bit and the transparent green glass looks a bit lopsided, this isn't the first time this has happen, not sure why that is, as it didn't start out that way. I think I have to remember to step back and look at my paintings as I work, to keep this from happening.

I loved painting this one because of the transparent green glass, the shadow it cast was really cool against the little jug and the dark blue shadow, almost like it was a light source.

Enjoy
